Getting "Fired up" for the 61st Annual October Melodrama- THE FLUME OF DOOM

Written exclusively for Triangle Club by Iola Barbee
Scenes take place in the late 1890s

This year’s timely melodrama, about a drought in Julian, was written by Iola Barbee. It is set in the late 1800s and is loosely based upon Julian history, featuring a heroine in distress with the handsome, indefatigable hero rescuing his beloved from the morally reprehensible villain. Flume of Doom or One Slip Was to Be Her Downfall is a comedy about a professing rainmaker who wanders into Julian City with his less-than-brainy sidekick, claiming to have the answer to the community’s waterless woes. He conspires with two wandering gypsies who purport to be able to dance up a downpour.

Meanwhile, the townspeople are raising money for the installation of a fl ume to carry water down the mountain into the rainthirsty community, and have no idea that this ill-intentioned visitor has set his sights on their proceeds—and not to help increase them. Two aunts with a penchant for zaniness and a sheriff who is a man of few words enhance the humor of this colorful cast and whimsical portrayal of life, mannerisms, and period apparel in this classic comedy melodrama.

Your participation is encouraged- boo the villain, cheer the hero, and cry “awwww” when the sweet heroine appears. Sometimes the characters need warning or advice—but keep it clean—it’s a family show!

Between acts there is an “olio” (variety show) featuring local talent with guitar and dulcimer players, singers, recitals, standup comedy, junior cancan dancers, and the famous Triangle Club Chorus, a.k.a. Julian Floozies, as seen on Huell Howser’s California Gold!
